Show #35 – Podcasting – Your First Recording

Prior to recording or starting a live show jot down notes. I use Evernote which is a free program.

Kinds of Notes:

  • Scripts: Keeps you on track, but can take a long time to put together.  Try to keep your voice sounding natural, not like you’re reading somthing.
  • Outline: Allows you to stay on track but usually take a lot less time to create than scripts.  Jot down essential points and sub points and talk about each one.

Prior to Recording

Intro or Show Greeting

The elements of an intro

  • The show’s name
  • The name of the host(s)
  • Location of show

Tag Line: A tag line identifies your show and is original.  This may require a brainstorming storming session.  Copyblogger.com has a great article on how to create a tag line.

  • Incorporate the elements of an intro into your tag line.
  • Tag lines do work according to marketing experts.

Outtros

  • No much different than an intro except that it’s at the end of the show.
  • An outro is the last thing your listener hears from you until the next show.
  • Make it exciting and sound confident in your voice.

Catch Phrase: We also talked about catch phrases.  Your catch phrase should be original and should also identify your show like your tag line.

Teasers: Teasers are designed to keep your listeners listening.

  • Your next show topic.
  • Use teasers to keep your listeners during sponsor breaks.

Tangents:  These can be a life saver by filling space to keep your podcast up to 30 mins.  And can also prove to be valuable to help get your point across.

Editing your recording:  We talked about the reasons for editing your podcast recording.  Ambient noises are one of those reasons.

Providing show notes: Always provide show notes immediate or some point after the show is done.  Provide links and enough information about the show so that the people that have listened can reference and remember what you talked about.  Do not include all information so that the passer by’s will download your podcast to get more information.
