Where did the word PodCast come from:  Ipod and Broadcast.  PodCasts or Netcasts have evolved from Audio to video broadcasts.

How to have your own podcast:

Research

  1. What do you want to base your podcast on?  What is the category of your podacast?  You can have a podcast about anything as long as their is content that you can provide.
  2. See what other podcasters are doing.
  3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions of other podcasters

Hardware – Equipment I Use

  1. A Computer, laptop or desktop
  2. Microphone and or podcast kit: Example
  3. I you’re doing a live show, I recommend a mixer of some sort.
  4. Software to record your show.  Audacity

 Tips

  1. Initially start small, and do not expect a lot of downloads.  .  Just record audio and get used to speaking into a microphone.  You might find out that you don’t like doing podcasts or decide oni another  category of podcasts.
  2.  Keep your show structured.
  3. Don’t try to compete with other podcasts, instead build your community, have a forum section.  Listener participation enhances your show, adds value to other listeners.
  4. Listen to listeners.
  5. Be Nice!

Show Notes

  1. Find a volunteer that is willing to take show notes as you talk.  These would be different than the notes that you are reading for topics to be discussed during the show.
  2. Shows should have notes that are accessible via a web site.  You do not want the listeners writing notes instead of listening to you.
  3. Take notes throughout the week of ideas of things that pop into your mind
  4. Use a small note pad or Carry a pocket size digital recorder. I recommend the VN-4100PC by Olympus
  5. For a live show get the show notes up as soon as possible after the show.  Most listeners will go to the site later on after the live show to find the notes.

 Marketing your Podcast

  1. RSS Feed (Real Simple Syndication): http://feeds.feedburner.com/TechnologyWithMike
  2. Find forums other than your own to see if you find people asking questions about a topic that you might have talked about or will talk about.  Give them a brief answer to show them that you know what you are talking about and let them know that they can find more information at your site and on your podcast or live netcast.  (DO NOT SPAM FORUMS).
