Making technology easier to understand!

Month: November, 2008

No Show this weekend! – 11-23-08

Thank you for visiting the site and listening to the show.  I am delighted to help each and everyone of you with your computer issues and questions.

As I mentioned in the last show, I will be away from my studio the whole weekend coming up, so I will not be able to host the live show for November 23, 2008.  In lieu of the show, I invite everyone to sign up for  the TechwithMike Forums.  It’s free and will allow you to ask computer questions, make suggestions for show topics, and even help out others with their computer or technology needs.  Also remember you can send me email at techwithmike@gmail.com with any questions, suggestions, or comments.

Also you can listen to past shows on Talkshoe.

Thanks again for listening, and I will see you next weekend.

Elpidios from the chat room asked: what’s the best way to save complete websites locally and preserving all the links for future reference?

Typical web browsers like Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox 3 will allow you to save webpages along with all the links.  After opening the webpage, go to the file menu and look for a save or export feature.  If you use Microsoft Word, you can go to file/open and type in the URL of the webpage then just save it to a file.

Also keep in mind, Google cahces all webpages.  When search in Google the results will show a cache link.

Side Note: We mentioned disabling User Access Control in the show.  User Access Control is the anoying messages you get when you want to something in the systems configuration.  Here is the steps to disable it.

NOTE: Disabling this will lead to a less secure computer

  1. Go to Control panel
  2. Select User Accounts
  3. Click on ‘Turn User ACcount Control on or off”
  4. Uncheck the box next to ‘Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer”
  5. Click ‘OK’

Daveac’s Tips

He talked about setting the priority of a process to limit a program on how much processor power it uses.

  1. Right Click in empty space on task bar and select ‘Task Manager’
  2. Go to the ‘Processes’ tab
  3. Find the process taking up CPU cycles
  4. Right click process and select ‘set affinity’ then choose the CPU you would like that process to use.

No more sidebar:  The sidebar that holds all the gagets can be closed and have the gagets put directly on the desktop.

  1. Click and drag each gaget that you want to save onto the desktop.
  2. Right click the sidebar and select ‘Close Sidebar’

NOTE: To get the sidebar back, simply right click a gaget and select ‘ATTACH TO SIDEBAR’ then drag other gagets back into it.
